A clip from Kamala Harris’ interview with Howard Stern has gone viral after he asked her about her love for Formula 1.
The video, which has been viewed 5.7 million times on TikTok, shows Stern asking Harris whether she really likes Formula 1, or if it’s just “a campaign thing,” to which Harris responds: “We love it. Our whole family does.”
Harris went on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM on Tuesday, October 8, as part of a wide-ranging media blitz ahead of the election.
Despite the conversation occurring a week ago, MSNBC uploaded the video of Stern asking Harris about Formula 1 to their TikTok account on October 14, and it went enormously viral.
In the clip, Stern asks: “And just answer this quickly. Why do you like Formula 1? These guys drive around the cars, over and over again in a circle.”
To which Harris responds: “Oh it’s so good!”
Harris insisted she’s a real fan and not just saying it as part of an election strategy. If anything, she said it’s been difficult to watch the sport recently because she’s been busy campaigning, and a lot of the races take place at difficult hours as they occur overseas.
One of the top comments on the video, with 14,100 likes, reads, “If it’s a campaign thing, she would claim NASCAR, not Formula 1,” observing that Formula 1 is seen as a foreign sport, whereas NASCAR is the more popular league in the U.S.
There is only one American team in Formula 1 at the moment, and it is owned by Gene Haas, who is best known for his NASCAR team.
Formula 1 has seen a recent burst in fame after the launch of the hugely popular Drive To Survive on Netflix.
Referred to as “Keeping up with the Car-crashians” by British satirist Marina Hyde, Drive To Survive is part documentary, part reality TV, about the lives and careers of Formula 1 drivers. Reporting from The Athletic found that 53 percent of U.S. Formula 1 fans started watching the sport because of the Netflix show.
When asked about her favorite driver, Harris said: “Lewis Hamilton, of course.” Hamilton, from England, is often considered one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time.
At 39, Hamilton is tied for the most World Drivers Championships of all time, and also holds the record of the most wins and podium finishes in the sport.
Hamilton, as Harris told Stern, just ended his 10-year run with Mercedes to drive for Ferrari next season.
During the interview, Stern and Harris also discussed harder-hitting issues, such as if she fears for her safety if Trump were to win in November, and Harris’ former law career.
Harris went into depth about her record as a prosecutor, telling the radio host that she “put a lot of people in jail,” during her career.
She told Stern that “some of the most important work that anyone can do” is what she achieved as a prosecutor.
She also told the radio host that she has been losing sleep over the stakes of the 2024 election, adding that she fears for democracy, national security, and the basic needs of people in the country.
